O número de ratos de Tóquio está aumentando, mas é a escolha de residência dos roedores que preocupa mais as autoridades municipais: os animais parecem ter uma preferência por casas ocupadas por idosos. O problema obrigou a cidade a lançar uma investigação sobre como os roedores afetam as pessoas idosas.
"Os ratos são agressivos, principalmente na casa de pessoas idosas que vivem sozinhas", disse hoje uma autoridade da prefeitura de Tóquio. "Temos que fazer algo a respeito porque a maior parte dos idosos não consegue lidar com esse problema por conta própria."
Autoridades de Tóquio disseram ter recebido 17.388 reclamações - muitas de idosos - sobre ratos nos últimos 12 meses, um salto em relação às 10 mil recebidas há cinco anos. Os ratos tenderiam a fazer ninhos nas casas de pessoas idosas porque ali a comida é deixada sem proteção, segundo especialistas.
Uma pesquisa em 2002 mostrou que cerca de 14% das casas na capital japonesa eram habitadas por idosos e que mais da metade deles vivia sozinha.
